If you haven’t heard, my article here might have caused a bit of legal trouble for myself and the Tribune. I was inspired (and outraged) after I read Mark Steyn’s article that was reprinted in the Gazette. At the same time, I had been doing research for a sidebar about Bill C-10 funding restrictions and the history of media censorship in Canada. What I found was a disturbing pattern — an illiberal crusade on the part of minorities to shut out unpleasant ideas using Canadian law. I wrote this up in the aforementioned op-ed, and waited. I purposely didn’t feature lawyer and activist Richard Warman very prominently — knowing that others have had trouble with him.

Last week, one of our own Tribune columnists proudly proclaimed, “I can say pretty much whatever I want [in my column], because that is part of what being a Canadian is about… We hold our right to free speech as dear as we hold our right to due process-and any perceived challenge to said rights arouses fierce opposition and fury.”

She expressed a noble sentiment, indeed. If only that were really the case here in Canada.

Canadians live under the veneer of free expression, as granted by their precious Charter of Rights and Freedoms. However, just beneath the placid surface of Canadian jurisprudence lies a whole host of thorny anti-liberal restrictions on freedom of speech and expression.

The Canadian Charter shamefully abridges and limits free expression, and restrictions on free speech go deep. For example, under Section 318 of the criminal code, Canadians don’t have the right to “promote hate,” no matter how silly, satirical, farfetched or shallow their ‘advocacy’ is meant to be.

Warman did not respond directly to my e-mail, instead threatening the editor-in-chief of the Tribune (a student herself, buried in final exams, group projects and putting together a newspaper) over content that appeared in my personal blog. I don’t know what he expected to accomplish. Even if asked by the Tribune management or the Student Society, I would not retract information that appeared in my personal blog. In all this time, he never has asked to speak to the author of the piece — only harassing the full-time student editor-in-chief of a student newspaper. He also has not replied to my e-mail, despite the fact that I was willing to engage with him in a polite and respectful manner over this issue. Below is what I sent him upon receiving the initial threatening e-mail from Warman.

He may not have filed charges against David Icke but Richard Warman was behind throwing a pie in his face because he was too pompus and full of themselves. Sure you may have thought I was talking about Warman but nope I was talking about David Icke in this clip they also tell you Warman got his bookings cancelled, they also passed legislation in BC so he couldn’t sue libraries there that may have been over Icke too.

Note their version of free speech there is no rebuttal just, well,… maximum disruption,…

Does this guy help the image of the Canadian Armed Forces or what?
